Mounting a Pullbox®, VS-1 or MiniVS Product Security Tether

We often get mounting questions from our customers as they are installing Vulcan Spring’s patented and trademarked Pullbox® security tethers.  To address this issue, we have put together a blog entry to discuss the many ways the Pullbox® can be mounted to a display.  This information should be used only as a guide and suggestions may vary depending upon the application.

In most applications for a security tether, the mounting of the box should be considered during the design of the display.  Here we break down the different box styles and discuss some of the options.

Mounting a Pullbox®:

  • Screws: All four corners of the Pullbox® have holes for a .156” diameter or less screw.   When using a screw for mounting, it is important not to self-tap the screw into the Pullbox® as this will damage the case.  Wood screws or screws with a countersunk head are not recommended.  The screw should fit loosely into the hole.  Lightly tighten the screw in the place, as too much pressure could crack the plastic.
  • Double-Sided Tape: Vulcan Spring offers a variety of tape options for the bottom, top and sides for the surfaces of the Pullbox®.  If ordered with tape installed, one side of the tape will be fixed to the box when shipped.  Simply remove the backing material on the tape and press into place.  Tape is best applied to a clean, dry surface.  If using a heavy bond tape, approximately 24 hours should be allowed for the adhesive to fully bond.
  • Spring Pressure/Cavity:  It is possible that the spring pressure will hold the Pullbox® in place.  This occurs when there is constant tension on the cable due to an extended length of cable between the Pullbox® and the product at rest on the shelf or display.  The decision to use this method should be tested to be sure the force on the box is satisfactory for the application and will hold the Pullbox® sufficiently in place.  Since each application is different, pre-testing is advised.  The Pullbox® may also be confined to a cavity and locked in place.

VS-1 Mounting:

    1. Screws: It is extremely important to choose the correct screw for the VS-1 product.  The screw should be .140” or less in diameter and have a head of .395” or less.  Again, it is not recommended to use wood screws, screws with a countersunk head or any screw that would self-tap into the plastic.  Caution should be taken not to over tighten the screw.  The VS-1 is designed to rotate in the direction of the cable extension and a loose fit screw will allow for that to happen.  Putting too much pressure on the screw will put stress on the plastic and cause the cable to drag or stay out when extended.  This also could crack the plastic and destroy the unit.
    2. Double-Sided Tape: A variety of tape options for the bottom, top and side surfaces of the VS-1 are available for purchasing.  If ordered with tape, one side of the tape will be fixed to the box when shipped.  Remove the backing material on the tape and press into place.  Care should be taken to place adhesive on a clean, dry surface.  If ordering a heavy bond tape, allow 24 hours for the adhesive to fully bond.
    3. Swivel: Vulcan offers a convenient swivel attachment that locks into the hole in the VS-1 which is then mounted to the display with double-sided tape.  This optional attachment piece allows the VS-1 to swivel and eliminates the need for a screw.
    4. Spring Pressure/ Cavity: The VS-1 can support itself in place due to the spring pressure.  Be sure to test this option prior to utilizing it in a display or on a shelf.

MiniVS Mounting:

  1. Double-Sided Tape:  Individual pieces of tape can be applied to the top or bottom surface of the MiniVS to attach to the display.
  2. Spring Pressure: The MiniVS can support itself in place due to the spring pressure.  Be sure to test this option prior to utilizing it in a display or on a shelf.
