Pioneering Aerospace Solutions
At Vulcan Spring & Manufacturing, we are proud to contribute to groundbreaking aerospace missions and applications, including the James Webb Space Telescope, Mars Rover, and the International Space Station, through our innovative spring solutions. Our Hinge Spring, in particular, exemplifies our commitment to excellence and reliability in the most demanding environments.
Materials Matter: Ensuring Reliability in Space
Aerospace design heavily relies on proven materials due to the high costs and single-attempt nature of space missions. Our aerospace customers are meticulous about material choices to avoid any issues. Our preferred 301 Stainless Steel offers excellent properties and is widely used throughout the Aerospace Industry.
Coatings for Enhanced Performance
To enhance performance, reduce friction, and provide longevity of our Hinge Springs, we offer various coating solutions. A common choice is Everlube 620C, a molybdenum disulfide-based solid film lubricant. This coating forms a thin, slippery layer that helps prevent cold welding and other binding effects among the spring laminations, effectively addressing the specific needs of our aerospace customers.
Project: The DART Mission
Vulcan Spring’s expertise in Hinge Springs was crucial to the success of the Deep Space Asteroid Deflection Mission (DART), a joint effort between NASA and John Hopkins APL. This mission aimed to study the effects of a high-speed impact on the orbit of the asteroid Dimorphos. Our hinge springs played an essential role, enabling the solar array to capture energy from the sun, vital for the satellite’s operations.
When satellites are launched into space, the solar array(s) are positioned against the body of the satellite to keep its size compact. After the launch, the Hinge Spring(s) actuate, allowing the solar array to open and gather energy for the satellite.
Conclusion
Vulcan Spring & Manufacturing continues to pioneer solutions that drive advancements in aerospace technology. Our Hinge Springs are a testament to our dedication to reliability, precision, and innovation. As we look to the future, we remain committed to supporting missions that expand our understanding of the universe and contribute to humanity’s progress in space exploration.
