5 Steps to Designing a Custom Security Tether

Generate Sales by Enhancing Customer Experience with a Custom Pullbox®.

The Pullbox, the original security tether, is ideal for retail store display product positioning and as a product sample theft deterrent. Display security tethers can be purchased as stock but at Vulcan Spring, the inventor of the Pullbox, we understand that every project is unique and has its own set of requirements.  By utilizing a custom Pullbox, you can tailor the experience for a customer, resulting in a thrilled buyer and ultimately more sales. Everybody wins!

For the sake of this blog, we are using the standard box style.  Other retractor styles are available and can be found at on the Pullbox Product Line Page.

Before you start, note that not all combinations are possible and designs should be discussed with an Engineer.  With that in mind, let’s get started!

Step 1: Choose the Pull Force

When discussing the pull force, we are referring to the amount of force needed to pull a product sample out of the display and retract it back with just enough force to position it properly.  Shoppers want to have a great experience and don’t want the product to be too difficult to pull out for viewing or snap back into the display when they are done!

Determining how much force you need is essential and may affect your cable diameter and types. The standard Pullbox can utilize the following pull forces:

Pounds: 0.13, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00
Kilograms: 0.06, 0.11, 0.23, 0.34, 0.45, 0.68, 0.91

Step 2: Select an Exit Location

Each display tether features four possible exit locations. When determining the exit location for your tether,  it’s important to realize that the cable will perform best when extended straight and will lengthen the life of the Pullbox.

The four available options include:

  • Top – for mounting the box underneath a display.
  • Center – used when the box is placed behind a display with limited space.
  • End – for mounting the box behind a display. This is the most commonly used exit location.
  • Side – same as the center exit but gives another option for box placement in the display.

Step 3: Select a Cable Diameter & Extension

Your cable diameter choices may be limited based on the desired pull force.  With the original Pullbox, there are three common cable types available to choose from:

  1. Standard – .027” (0.686 mm) diameter  Stainless Steel, Black or Clear Nylon coated to .034” (0.864 mm) diameter.
  2. Heavy – .036” (0.914 mm) diameter Stainless Steel, Black or Clear Nylon coated to .045” (1.143 mm) diameter.
  3. Very Heavy – .045” (1.143 mm) diameter Stainless Steel, Black or Clear Nylon coated to .062” (1.575 mm) diameter.

The Pullbox can support extensions from 12” (304.80 mm) to 60” (1,524 mm).  The very heavy cable option is only valid to 48” (1,219.20 mm).

Step 4: Determine the Perfect End Fitting

There are many end fittings that Vulcan Spring offers to attach the security tether to your product.  Each Pullbox includes a zinc ball end. Various plates are available to order separately that work with the ball end. For a more customized end a ring terminal, key ring, or a loop may best suit your needs.  For a complete list of end fittings, you can view the product page and click on the end fittings link or download our brochure.

Step 5: Select Tape for Mounting

Utilizing double-sided tape is one of the easiest ways to attach the Pullbox to your display.  It can be applied on the top, side, or even bottom of the box. Tape isn’t a requirement, and the box can be mounted with screws if desired.  Review our retail security tether product page for more specifics

That’s all there is to it!

Now that you have selected a few options, we recommend that you discuss your project with a Vulcan Engineer. We want to ensure you have the best security tether for your product display.
